about us

JASON institute is a Dutch student organization founded in 1975. Before the end of the Cold War JASON focused primarily on Atlantic relations. After this period JASON enlarged its field of interest due to global changes. Nowadays the foundation focuses on international peace- and security issues in its broadest sense. The aim of JASON is providing students a wider understanding about issues concerning international security. To achieve this goal JASON organises for instance lectures, conferences and visits to international organisations. On these occasions students and experts, mostly from the diplomatic and academic level, are gathered to discuss a specific and often recent theme in international relations.

Four times a year JASON publishes a Magazine about international relations. The editorial staff consists of students and the articles provided in the JASON Magazine are a combination of student and expert pieces of writing.
Every student interested in international relations regardless of his or her field of study can take part in activities organized by Stichting JASON. Subscription to the Magazine is free and open to everyone interested in issues concerning international relations.

Are you interested in international politics and do you like to write? Become an editor at the JASON Institute!

JASON Foundation is a platform of students for exchanging information about-, and debating issues of international peace and security from out the academy for governance, safety and law of the Hague university. During the forming years of JASON the focus was mainly on topics of transatlantic relations but, in part by keeping up with international developments, JASON then broadened its field of interest to the whole spectrum of international political issues. In doing so, JASON is not affiliated to any political party and has no particular philosophical background.

JASON provides information in two ways. First, JASON informs through the organization of numerous activities such as conferences, debates, lectures, simulation games and excursions. Secondly, JASON publishes a magazine, which appears once every three months, free of charge for all those interested. In each edition a varied overview of relevant and up-to-date themes within the broad field of international security issues is provided through articles, reviews, interviews and columns.

As an editorial member, you and your co-editors and editor in chief are responsible for bringing about JASON Magazine each quarter. During the year 2009/2010, JASON Magazine will appear four times, and you are expected to contribute at least once for each edition. You may yourself author an article or arrange for somebody else to write a relevant piece. You will be a participant in discussions about the course that the magazine will take, and take part in recruiting students and experts who might contribute for the magazine.
Finally, you will be participating in the implementation of the theme-oriented working method of the foundation. JASON organizes three main projects on a yearly basis, which focus on one specific theme within peace and security topics. A project team will organize different activities during the term of each project, which the editorial team is then expected to convert into articles for the magazine. One can think of study trips, debates, excursions or interviews with academics, politicians and other professionals from the policy field. To give an example, a group of editors visited a military exercise of the Dutch Navy in Romania in April, 2009. They stayed on board of the HR. MS. Johan de Witt for a week, and produced an extensive report about the new strategic concept of the Royal Navy. Resulting from this report was a number of articles that were then published in JASON Magazine, with the aim of informing Dutch students about recent Navy affairs.
