Op 25 mei wordt er door het TMC Asser Instituut en CLEER een workshop georganiseerd over Human rights and EU crisis management. Deze workshop is door iedereen bij te wonen.

‘Human rights and EU crisis management operations: a duty to respect and to protect?’

Workshop organised by the T.M.C. Asser Instituut and the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) in cooperation with the Netherlands Defense Academy on 25 May 2012 at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague.

The conference will bring together a group of academic and professional experts to explore two timely cross-cutting themes relating to EU crisis management operations: (1) the duty to ensure respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in EU crisis management missions; and (2) the contribution that such missions make to the Union’s policy of promoting human rights at the international level. Highly-recognized legal scholars as well as practitioners from Member States’ administrations, the Council, European Parliament and EU CSDP missions will discuss the challenges of the human rights dimension in the EU’s conduct of crisis management operations.

Visit the NATO HQ and EEAS in Brussels!

On 16 February JASON Institute will travel to Brussels to visit the NATO Headquarters and the European External Action Service (EEAS). At the NATO we will listen to a lecture given by the Dutch Permanent Representative to the NATO Frank Majoor. One of the topics that will be discussed at the NATO is the so-called "Responsibility to Protect"-doctrine.

JASON Institute arranged a bus to travel to the capital of Belgium. The costs for this trip are €20,- per person. This amount has to be transferred to the following account in advance:

Combating Malnutrition: More than a Moral Imperative

The world population is growing, and the arable land is decreasing. For example China has to feed 1.3 billion people, but only has seven per cent of the world’s arable land of which it is losing over a million hectares per year to pollution and desertification. Even though there is enough food today to feed the world’s population, a part of that population, located in the developing world, is not getting enough, nor the right kind of food, leading to under-nutrition. The reasons for food insecurity are manifold. In the following article, some of the initiatives taken and solutions proposed to diminish this problem will be discussed.

Het Nederlandse Buitenlands Beleid in 2011: Een Politiek van Terughoudendheid

2011 kent vele mogelijke typeringen. Het was het jaar waarin de zeven miljardste mens het licht zag en het jaar waarin de natuurwetenschappen even op hun grondvesten daverden door de ontdekking van een deeltje dat sneller dan het licht zou kunnen reizen. Prominent in het wereldnieuws waren ook Emilio Di Rupo, Osama Bin Laden, George Papandreou en op de valreep ook Kim Jong-il, maar bovenal was 2011 het jaar van de Arabische Lente, en daarmee van ‘De Demonstrant’, Mohammed Bouazizi, Muammer Khadaffi en Bashar al-Assad. Politieke veranderingen te over dus. Hoe heeft Nederland zich dit jaar verhouden tot de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen op het wereldtoneel? JASON maakt de balans op.

PROJECTEN

Project: International Criminal Law
Our project tries to illuminate the importance of law in order to change human behaviour. In particular we will look at International Criminal Law (ICL). What does ICL mean in practice? How is the ICC dealing with international criminals that have committed massive and serious crimes? What are the lessons learned concerning ICL and the ICC and what is the best way forward?
We would like to give the opportunity to all students and experts to send in articles concerning this topic, which will be checked by our editorial staff.
In January our magazine with its main topic ICL will be published in a printed and a digital version.
Our project will end in January 2011.

The Arabic Spring and the Law of Armed Conflict: Is the law applicable and can it be enforced?

Have you ever seen or met the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)? I actually have in Geneva at their headquarters while on a study trip. Have you ever encountered the law of armed conflict, also known as international humanitarian law (IHL)? In theory I have learned about IHL, during my masters degree. Luckily I have never encountered the law of armed conflict in real life. I do not live in a war zone and I have never visited a war zone, unless you want to consider Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories as such.
